My interview went quite well last week, and if all goes to plan I'll me moving up to Chicago quite soon. I need some advice on where to look for a safe place to stay. I'll be moving up alone, and the rest of my family will be coming up in May when the kids get out of school , and we will then buy a home. Anyway, i'm looking for a cheap and small place to stay for about 6 months. Nothing fancy just one bedroom, probably a studio is all I need. What areas are considered safe downtown? I'd like to stay around $600 a month if at all possible. If not living in the burbs is fine. Thanks

You are not going to get a 1 bedroom for 600 in a relatively safe, close to downtown, AND in a "hip" area. There are dozens upon dozens of decent areas in the city. Is it important that the place be close to a train to go downtown? There are many factors involved in suggesting an area.

Actually you can if you rent by the week or month.

Not as crazy as it seems. My management company is now leasing 1BR's in my building for $625, studios for $585. I will admit, I haven't seen much for $600 even (though I rented a really, really crappy place in Bridgeport for $610 a month)

Yeah, i just re-read that post and saw "safe" and "downtown".

I don't think either really fit the bill perfectly.
