The New York Times has this great new features showing data from the Census Bureau's recent American Community Survey (2005-2009): Mapping America — Census Bureau 2005-9 American Community Survey - NYTimes.com

Zoom out and scroll over to Chicago. Loads of info for demographic nerds. I'll probably be spending way too much time examining the data.

One quick observation is that Oak Park demographics appear pretty stable compared the 2000 census. Also, the Asian population from Chinatown is really spreading out along Archer Ave.

That's some pretty strong evidence that Western Ave in the Logan Square and West Town community areas is a fixed line of demarcation. I would have assumed that a much greater number of whites had marched west to California than what the numbers indicate.

Here's the 2000 Census data (actual enumeration) for comparison.

Not only that, but...have there always been that many blacks living on the north side lakefront from Montrose to Howard?

I'm a demographic nerd and this new map feauture is pretty cool. The southside is a tad bit more diverse than 2000, but still almost(100% in some parts) a solid blue around mid south. Hyde Park appears to be the united nation surrounded by the blue sea.

You needed this map to tell you this when there have been a handful of people on this site that have stated the same thing the last few years?

In most parts the south side is 95%-99% black.

So a few more notes:
Comparing the 2005-2009 data to 2000 proves what we already knew, dramatically increased white population on the near west and near south sides.

Demoltion of CHA hi rises resulting in loss of black population along State street corridor and around the United Center (to name just a few areas).

Increased Hispanic population in Hegewisch (to near parity).

Didn't realize there was still a substantial minority population of whites in the Island (just south of Columbus Park in Austin).
