Not sure if this should be in a city vs city forum, as I realize I might get a Chicago bias in the Chicago room. However, maybe people who have lived in both who are gay or have gay friends can help out with my question. I currently live in Dayton Ohio and have just finished graduate school in May. After the holidays I will be looking for jobs and Im narrowed down to Columbus or Chicago. My family is in Dayton and so I want to stay in the Midwest area and also due to cost of living, you cant beat the Midwest.

I have spent time in both Chicago and Columbus (more in Columbus). I love both cities. Columbus is a little cheaper, but Chicago has more to offer in terms of big city living. Both have vibrant gay communities. I'm single and 37 so Im interested in hearing about which city has the best opportunities for dating for middle aged, and also what the opinions are on which is more gay friendly and better for gays to live. Dayton tends to be very closeted and not sophisticated, and Im looking to get away from that for sure.

Thanks for your thoughts!

There are probably 100 times the gay men in Lake View neighborhood of Chicago alone than in the entire area around Columbus. If quantity and variety are a factor for you, Chicago would have the edge.

I do have a few gay friends. Chicago is a very gay friendly city. Lakeview and Wicker Park are large gay communities. I'm told the top 3 gay friendly cities are SF, LA, and Chicago.

Professional gay man? You make a living at it? You're probably better off in Chicago then.

If cost of living is your major concern, pick Columbus.
If the gay scene is your top priority, pick Chicago.

More likely, the real answer lies somewhere in the middle, so it's hard to tell you what you want, of course!

My advice would be to spend some time budgeting. If you think you'll be making the kind of money in Chicago that you'd need to live the kind of life you want, then I say do it! You can always move closer to home in a couple of years if you find Chicago not quite your style.

He takes rough, unpolished straight men and makes them presentable so that women will talk to them. There's an enormous market for their services.

The Hipsters are being pushed out. Younger gay couples are moving in. No complaints there. They pay taxes for services they don't use (schools namely). They also keep the streets well maintained. And they spend a ton of money (helps the economy).

Columbus is very well known in the gay community as having the largest community after Chicago within the Midwest. Or at least the highest concentration. Chicago would probably be better for professionals - and of couse it's going to have a LOT more gay people as far as sheer numbers.

What are you looking for as far as a city goes? That's probably what you should pay attention to.
