Hello,

I just came back from a trip to Chicago and loved the city! However, I did notice that as diverse as the city is, it is pretty segregated. I'm originally from California and my husband is from Miami, so we are accustomed to a little bit more integration between all races.

But despite this, we are seriously considering to relocate there at the end of next year. People have told us that Lincoln Park and Evanston are the best places for families - however, is this true even for multicultural families?

The type of area we are looking should have certain traits like:

- very liberal
- well educated
- good schools with diversity (preferably public, if at all possible)
- easy access to the city (although the suburbs would be okay, as long as its within 30-40 minutes)
- walking trails

Thanks ahead of time!

Vanessa

Well since you have not told us what cultures you and your husbands backround are we can only guess on where to direct you-which probably will not be much use to you.

Default Despite appearances of segregation the more important factor is BUDGET...

If you have the income to live in Evanston's desirable areas that ought to be a good option. If you cannot afford Evanston then Lincoln Park will ny way way out of reach and you will have some tough choices about schools.

If you want to find a place where your budget goes further investigate Homewood and Flossmore, they are sigh suburbs that have a higher than average mix of AA moronity students and families that seem to do OK.

If you have the resources to live in any desirable suburb you will not be disappointed in the schools regardless of what color(s) of skin your family might have.

It is really more true that Chicago and the region is more "stratified" or self selected by INCOME than truly segregated as there are but a handful of people that would ever do anything to exclude people of any particular racial / cultural background. If you do not have a personal resources and you end up in a poorer area it is no surprise that crime is higher, schools are miserable, attitudes toward others are hostile. Folks with no ability to support themselves do not have the same attitudes that linearly with expensive degrees and bohemian ways espouse -- the coming election will almost certainly show marked differences in participation / voting along those lines...
