Short answer is there are lots of SRO's and social service clinics to make central uptown a mecca for vagrants with mental illness/addictions, which means there's open drug dealing, which means there are gang issues.

But, like I said, taking the Broadway bus, you'll be fine. As 60614 noted, the Target is really on the periphery of the bad part of Uptown, and the amount of lighting, foot traffic, and security around it make it unlikely you'd be a victim of a crime taking the bus there. If you were to walk north on broadway with a few bulging shopping bags at midnight, probably a different story.

I thought it was really Wilson that was the sketchy stretch up there along Broadway, no?

Yeah...if I were closer to the L, I'd take the redline to Wilson to get there, but I wouldn't have my fiancee do that.

I think the area is fine.

Is the area the same as it was 20 years ago, better or worse?

Yeah If I were you I'd go to the Target in Uptown on Broadway. It's two stories, huge! It has tons of free underground parking if you have a car. If not its easy to get to on the bus. It also has a pretty big grocery section, much bigger than most targets, and the groceries are really cheap.

New Target coming to Division and Halsted?

"Target Corp., the cheap-chic discount chain, is in talks with the Chicago Housing Authority to build a store at the site of the former Cabrini-Green Housing Project."

"The agreement involves a land exchange in which Target would acquire Cabrini-Green land from the CHA in exchange for giving the CHA land elsewhere in the city, said Ald. Walter Burnett Jr., 27th."

Interesting I heard this on the news tonight. I wonder if it will come with a division brown line stop? And what other land does Target already own in the city?
