When I look at the top 5 cities, we just don't seem to be in the same league.

Chicago gains in global cities ranking | Chicago Breaking Business

Don't get me wrong, I love Chicago and recognize our importance in the world at large.

Who keeps posting these often ridiculous ranking lists? Zombies?

There are like 300 different city ranking lists around. There are also like 30 threads in this forum citing one stupid list or another that COMES OUT YEARLY!

Who cares how we rank? Either you like living here or you do not. Either you want to live the rest of your life here or you do not. 20 years ago most Chicagoans could really give a rats *** where Chicago came up on a ranking of cities.

Well, Chicago is of course an economic powerhouse with some of the largest exchange markets in the world. A Chicago Machine politician is now the most influential political leader in the world. Its cultural institutions are world-class though not necessarily top-tier. For better or worse, Chicago has the world stage now in a way it hasn't for about a century.

I agree that most rankings are BS, and that the only thing that is important is do you want to live here or leave.

Maybe people didn't care where Chicago ranked 20 years ago (I think they did, but they weren't obsessed with it or anything), but there is something (historically) in the nature of Chicago that does ask for recognition of the virtues of the city. It ain't called the Windy City because of the weather.

I don't see why not...

I mean maybe if they put a gap on the list bt new york and london or a point system... you'd see it better, as I do think the top 3-4 are a gap above the next 5-6..Chicago is certainly not on the level of NYC or London if that is what you are asking...

It has been ranked higher on similar lists before such as mastercard worldwide cities of commerce.

Also just b/c big things are being done in Chicago on a daily basis, it doesn't mean you are actually participating in them..

But for others, yes it is a place to call home, lots of opportunity, etc.

Have you been to the other cities on the list?

I've been to 14 of the top 20 on there, all except the asian ones and I'd say it matches up pretty well and belongs.

Of the four jobs I've had in Chicago, three have had extensive global reach into Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. And I've always been in an office environment with people from many countries. I don't think this is unusual in Chicago.
