Husband surprised us with tickets to Tom Petty tonite.
Any recommendations for restaurants within a reasonable distance (have car-will travel) We are interested in pre-show and have our teen age son with us who will eat just about anything that fits in his mouth. Thank you

Unfortunately the area right around the UC is an amenities desert. But you're not too far from West Loop or Ukranian Village/lower Wicker Park, both of which have a wide variety of dining options. Of course, Greektown is within easy car-shot too. Preferred cuisine, price point, ambiance, etc., would be helpful.

Thanks Drover, you are so right. Not much around there.
We were open on cuisine etc,so didnt mention anything special, just thought it would be a good idea to be close to the stadium. Mistake. Terrible Italian food which is hard to find in Chicago, but we did. Picked the place just for the convinience(Viaggios) and will widen our circle to West Loop or Greek town next time. Obviously, this place is skating by for its close proximity.
At least the concert was great.

Wow, sorry to hear about your dining experience. That's too bad because Viaggio gets really, really good reviews.

I know, read them on YELP thats why I picked it. Do not understand this at all.
I think the Viaggios must have a very large family.

As for widening your circle to the West Loop, Viaggio is in West Loop. Randolph is where the major "restaurant row" is, between Halsted and Ogden.

West Loop,,Remebering that 'hood from years ago, its a big improvement.
I am still ticked I was taken in by reviews on a site that may or may not be honest till I just re read it today and found others felt the same way as we did,,they are buried in praise and thanksgiving to such a "wonderful" restaurant. I decided I will now join Chowhound or Yelp next week and just be honest.
In the meantime, I appreciate the help in learning about the city that I thought I knew well.
Alot of interesting restaurants in West Loop/Fulton etc. I feel like a real sucker. Actually, l feel like a tourist.

I can't recommend Avec (on Randolph) enough. It's my favorite place in the city, and I have picky taste. It's where I take all my out of town guests.
