I've used Realtor.com for home searches, but they don't seem to update their properties. I also have used Condo.com which seemed a bit more helpful for condo searches. Which realty websites do you guys recommend for home searches. Include those websites for foreclosure and short sales as well.

I find that you do better by using the local realtor website. The few I looked at in Chicago were for the most part current. If you don't know the name of a realtor, look in the yellow pages of the local phone book or the real estate section in the Sunday paper. You should find plenty of choices.

If you are looking in a particual area of Chicago, ask on this board for realtor recommendations. If you are looking in the suburbs then ask in the Chicago Suburbs Forum.

Redfin has good search capability and a lot of info. You can save the searches and it will send you daily alerts on changes in the search results.

Realtor.com has every property that is currently listed on the MLS where the home's owner said the listing could be put online. The reason the properties aren't updated often is because the information is pulled directly from the various multiple listing services that Realtor's subscribe to and generally, once a Realtor puts a property in their MLS, they don't do much to change the listing info.

Redfin has more information, but you either have to be a Redfin agent or pay Redfin to list your property there, so there are not as many properties on there.

I personally like Trulia.com. Listings on Trulia can have as much or little info as the person creating the listing wants them to have and listing on Trulia is free, so I would think it would have more properties on it.

I like HotPads. I like the map; lets you scan different parts of city (and of the entire country) easily. Fun to play around with.
