Moving back to Illinois after 8 years away and looking for 1-bedroom apartments in the northern suburbs. I am considering accepting a job in Deerfield and my fiancee will be going to IIT-Stuart downtown. Walking distance to a Metra line is a big plus, and preferably no more than a 45-minute ride to Union Station or Ogilvie.

Really just looking for a nice, quiet neighborhood. Don't need lots of nightlife. Safe and comfortable, with an emphasis on paying off student loans instead of living luxuriously.

Any thoughts on where I might try looking?

Along these lines... she's going to be riding the train mostly during the evenings. There are some CTA rail lines I'd be much more leery about taking during the late hours compared to others. Is there a significant difference on Metra lines, across the Union Pacific North, Milwaukee District North, and the North Central Service?

METRA from Deerfield to Union Station is about 50 minutes each way. It's a comfortable ride and very safe. My guess is Deerfield rents are in the $850-$1000 range for a average to good place. There are small buildings within a few blocks of the Deerfield METRA.

When you drive along Deerfield Road (on both sides of the train line) there are a few apartments being privately advertised for rent. Very walkable.

Deerfield has a nice variety of apartments. All are walkable to the train station. Upscale newer developments that will run you $2400+ and older buildings---specifically off Deerfield Rd. just west of the Metra station and on Waukegan Rd. across from the library.....Maybe $850 to $1000 but my guess is probably a little higher than that.

LAKECOUNTYLIFER has excellent knowledge and info.

There are some townhouses further north of the Library on Waukegan Rd before the DF Hi that would run about $1700 per month. You may call up Deerfield Bakery and look for the owner, who may have houses to rent. Also try this number for Highland Park apts: 847-432-4229.
