I'm from the Melrose Park area but I've always wanted to live in Oak Park, and Forest Park. All are western suburbs outside of Chicago, and Less than 20 minutes from Down Town. Using the Metra to the city is great, especially if you don't plan on driving to work every day, and if you have a problem with paying high gas prices.

Oak Park and Forest Park has some of the best schools in the western part of Chicago. My son attended Sacret Heart and tuition was under 400.00. Oak Park River Forest High School is also a very good school. Although it's not a private one, many childern attending there come from families who are pretty well off.

I've always felt that the residents in Forest Park were the Ideal Neighbors. You'll NEVER EVER walk around that area and see grass uncut, trash in the streets, or hear loud music.

Thumbs up Fort Sheridan

Hi. Our family lives in a wonderful subdivision called the Town of Fort Sheridan on Chicago's North Shore, and we absolutely love it. The express train to Chicago takes 45 minutes and is 2 minutes drive from our house or a 10 minute walk. "The Fort" as it is called is an amazing value because the development is not yet complete, and it sits between two incredibly high priced communities (with amazing resources) - Lake Forest and Highland Park. The town of Highwood with great restaurants, bakeries, bowling, Champagne bar... is also walkable and both the city centers of Highland Park and Lake Forest are accessible via bicycle trail in 15 minutes. Best of all, you can walk to Lake Michigan. The Fort sits on the Lake, and there are amazing trails for biking and hiking being built here. I looked in all of the areas where other folks have mentioned, and I am so glad I chose to live here.

You may not be able to get something in the 400,000 range, but I think you might find something a little above that, especially in this market. With all of the improvements going on in this area, I think it also has enormous appreciation potential. If you google The Town of Fort Sheridan, you should find a website that tells you about the area. You can also go to the Open Lands website and see the plan for additional biking, hiking trails and beach access.

Good luck!

. It is absolutely stunning and within easy walking distance to lake Michigan. Directly outside
