Try Fox Lake, McHenry or Johnsburg. I grew up in Johnsburg and its a quiet area but still local. The Fox Lake train station is about 10 minutes from Johnsburg.

Stay away from Elgin. Try Antioch. There is a Metra depot downtown. Affordable housing. Cute little downtown. There is a superwalmart, and a Kohls & Target expected to come in soon. Antioch is an hour+ drive to the City and less than an hour to Milwaukee. Come and look around, I am sure you will like the town.
