Need to go during afternoon rush, starting out near 83rd and 55th. I've done mapquest, etc., and think taking LaGrange Road south at that time is a nightmare. How about 294 to I-80 then head west? Or, 83rd to I-55 to 365? HELP:confu sed:

I agree that you probably want to avoid major routes. The good thing is that portion of the "southland" is mostly well suited to secondary roads.

This ought to avoid worst traffic:
from:96th Ave/US-45 to:41.575453,-87.890797 to:Bell Rd to:91st St to:E Chicago Ave - Google Maps

Route 83/Kingery is an alternate to La Grange that would work for you as well.

Or you could try I-55 west to 355 South to I-80 East, but I imagine during afternoon rush this would be horrendous.

Depending on where in Orland you are traveling to, I would take Rt. 83 South to Bell Rd. to 123rd (McCarthy Rd), then either LaGrange or Wolf road depending on how far South (or west) you need to travel.

That is by far the best route.

thanks all...I am travelling to LaGrange and I-80. I've seen LaGrange back up for miles heading south, so want to avoid that. Does anyone know what 55 is like heading west at that time? Specifically from the 83rd entrance? And, what is the flow in 355 heading south at that time??

Thanks again!!

If you need to be near the LaGrange / I-80 area taking 355 is kinda of like going around the "really long way" -- as I and others have pointed out, the Rt 83/ Bell Rd/ Wolf combo with some wise east/west traverses is a much better alternate...

travel south on Wolf Rd to 167th street, head east on 167th take to Lagrange, that will put you about 1.5 miles from I80

I commute from ANL (just north of Lemont) to Orland Hills daily. 55 between 294 and 355 is just terrible. Almost 24x7 its terrible, but luckily its only like 5 miles...

355 south of 55 is never busy.

80 from 355 to Lagrange is busy between 4-5 every day (like it will take you 15-20 min to go the 5 miles). About as bad as 55.

I hate to say it, but 294 to LaGrange is probably your easiest route. I might recommend trying 83 down to Cal Sag then over to Lagrange. Or keep doing south from there on Bell until you want to cut over to LaGrange.

And some not so good news for the future... They are going to be redoing Lagrange from 143 to I-80 expanding it to 3 lanes... once thats starts LaGrange will be terrible south or 143...

Nate

Ok, I just "did it" today, at 4 p.m. in the rain. I got on 83 heading south, and had to make a decision whether to get on I55 heading west (to 355) or remain on 83 until I hit Bell. THANK GOD I remained on 83 because I55 was a nasty mess. Soooo, I stayed on Bell until I don't know, 183 or something, got over to wolf road, then made it to 80 and laGrange. All you wise sages were correct and I'm glad to have followed your advice!! I made it in approx 50 minutes, and right on time!!!

It is pretty down there - open spaces, etc. Just a note, I did take 355 north to 55 to 83 later in the evening and it went quickly, so not a bad option non rush hour. I will avoid LaGrange at all costs in the future as needed. Plus with snow in the near future (I don't know....next week???) it will only get worse.
