Where's Blagojevich to try it on a reality show when you need him?

Cicadas are often called locusts, but they are unrelated. Cicadas look like large, bug-eyed flies and are harmless, while locusts look like grasshoppers and destroy crops.

These are the common dog-day cicadas, named for the long, hot, "dog days" of summer.

Interestingly, according to Wikipedia (I know, it's not the best source), the Rocky Mountain locust died out in the late 1800s, making North America "the only populated continent without a major locust." The damage done nowadays to crops is from grasshoppers, not locusts.

I read the Little House on the Prairie books many times as a child, and I remember one book talked about a plague of locusts, where the locusts swarmed for days and ate everything green in sight--even some animals, I believe.

Those aren't cicadas, those are June Bugs! Our Cicadas come every 17 years, the last time was 2007. I have videos and pics. 15 more years to go! I'll be out of the state by then. But I will be sure to visit in 2024!

I know what you mean about the 17-year cicadas. I learned about them after I moved here in 2008, and I joke that we have to move before 2024.

But no, I am not talking about june bugs. June bugs are green or brown beetles and don't make any noise, at least not like cicadas. The cicadas that are common around here every year are green and black and look sort of like a giant fly. They make a loud rattling or buzzing noise. The swarms of 17-year locusts (a misnomer because they are not actually locusts) are black and red.

Imagine being a cicada that has been attacked by the "cicada killer" in that first link...horrible.

I heard the ( I have witnessed ) first cicadas in the city this year last night. I was out near the city limits in Belmont Heights near Harlem Ave.

I expect to start cicadas to reach Cicero Ave in a few days. Within two weeks the enitre city will have cicadas "singing."

There are many other cicadas that come out on different cycles. There are some types of cicadas every year.
