I have a job opportunity in Hines, IL. I would make $40,000/year. I would like to buy a single family house if I moved there. All I want is a simple 2-3 bedroom, 1 bathroom place.

Here is my criteria:
-As close to Hines as possible
-As safe as possible
-As affordable as possible

The area needs to be a compromise of those three factors.

Assuming you don't have signifcant savings, and using the rule of thumb that you can afford three times your income, you are not going to find a single family home anywhere in the Chicago area within your price range unless its in a distressed neighborhood.

go live in an apartment in the western suburbs.

DuPage County is quite safe, along basically with a majority of the burbs and many neighborhoods of the city itself. Just stay away from the obvious bad areas, which you wouldn't be moving too regardless of anything, and you're fine.
