We just did an apt hunting trip for my daughter. She's in pretty much the same situation as you. We found the Avalon Apts in Arlington Heights to be a good option. Their 600+ sq ft studios are really neat and affordable. A 1 bdrm was well within her budget but she would have gone with the studio due to its uniqueness. The vibe in Arlington Heights was to her liking. In the end, she ended up in a suburb where she already knew people and had a relatively easy commute.

Most single 20-somethings I know that move to the suburbs end up regretting it. The North Side is really the place to be if you're in this situation, but I understand that the commute to Hoffman Estates can be a KILLER.

Did you take a job at Sears or something?

My thoughts:

Best Movieplex - Barrington AMC 30 is by far the best movieplex in the area

Best Bar - Schaumburg has more "clublike bars" Alumni Club, Bamboo room (may be Heat nightclub now), John Barleycorn etc.. Mt.Prospect is boring and that's where I'm from so take it from someone who lives there.

Best Restaurants - I completely second Schaumburg!!

Best Library - Mt Prospect is pretty nice, AH, Schaumburg they all have nice facilities and there is a way to check out books from other libraries using your cards so you can utalize them all for free.

Best Nature/Scenary - Elk Grove Village.. I guess idk Barrington has some nice forest preserves

Best Accessibility - Mt. Prospect (in terms of access to I90 for the city, O'Hare, etc.)

Umm Lookout Kid why is it the school's fault she doesn't know the tax rate? it's her own fault for not taking responsibility for her life. And by the way it is fairly common thing for a graduating student to be clueless about taxes and real life economics. Thats why so many young kids voted for Obama, they have no idea what kind of taxes they brought on because of him

I don't want to get into an argument about politics, but please get the facts correct. Obama has only cut income/payroll taxes so far, and has only proposed raising income/payroll/SS taxes for those households making above $250,000.

If you know where kids graduating college this year can earn enough to be subject to top-bracket income taxes, I'm sure ~99.5% of them would love to find out where.
