In AH she could easily drive to woodfield and all of the restaurants etc. that Schaumburg has to offer. While if she lived in Schaumburg she could go to AH to take the train downtown or to visit the offerings AH has. It all depends on what parts of Schaumburg / AH you are looking as well.. Maybe after you visit some places you and her can get a feel for where you like better. I would agree with living in the suburbs though it will make her commute so much better- and just because she lives in the burbs doesn’t mean she can’t go to the city and party—especially if she has friends or co-workers that live down there.

As for ideas of apartments -- I didn't see what the price range you are looking at is that would make suggesting specific apartment complexes easier =)
Great to hear from someone her age. The budget she's starting with is $1,250/mo. It would be great to be less but she has the room to go higher if that's what it takes. Do you know anything about the Avalon Apts in AH? AH would be a little closer to her office in Buffalo Grove/Lincolnshire.

I am in her age group and I really wanted to live in the city! But I smartened up and realized that a short commute was the best choice. So I will be living near downtown Palatine. If your living in the suburbs in your 20s, I think its key to live very close to metra access. (as in walking distance)

If you want to be able to walk to the majority of places to eat/drink/shop Arlington Heights is far better than Schaumburg, where you have to drive everywhere.

Thanks for that perspective. My gut is to have a better commute by living in the suburbs. I did notice a number of places around the Metra in AH. I guess we can check out Palatine, too. Thanks, Crazy88.

middle-aged mom, haven't you recommended Arlington Heights in previous posts to young professionals? I know I read that somewhere on this thread last year when we were looking for an apt for her internship.
AH is predominately a family suburb.

The downtown area, near the primary train station, has shops, restaurants, theatre and a bar scene. The issue is affordable rent. Is she willing to share a place?

I favor Evanston because there are more apartments, more affordable and has more going on for singles than a strong family community.

If she's going to live in Evanston, then she might as well live in the city. By the time she deals with surface streets with stop lights and stop signs on her way to the Edens, she could get to work just as quickly from Logan Square.

What are the rents in AH? I think she can get by with 550 to 600 sq ft. (on her own). Her initial budget is $1,250. Less would be better but she has room to go higher, if need be. It looks like she can get a 1/1 at Avalon Apts for $1,250, all in. Do you know anything about that complex?

Hi- okay if these are the avalon apartments I'm thinking of they are right off of Arlington Heights road-- really close to the downtown area and train. I don't personally know of anyone that lives there off the top of my head but I can give you a good idea about the neighborhood. I personally would/do feel extremely safe around there. They are really close to the train I want to say maybe a block at most- restaurants, movies, grocery store, tanning, train etc.

I'll do a search and see if I can find any other leads for you and I'll plan to post them in a little bit!

This is an area on my daughter's list to check out. We all liked Evanston when we were there for one of her college visits. We'll do the commute route to see how it feels to her. Any recommendations on apts to look at? Thanks

Ok so a couple places to maybe check out or consider:

Dunton Towers
55 S Vail Ave
Arlington Hts, IL 60005
THE OAKBROOK COMPANIES || DUNTON TOWERS (http://www.oakbrookcorp.com/duntontowers.html - broken link)
I'm not sure how they are facility wise but location wise they are near to everything a block to metra, vail street jewel, restaurants, maybe two blocks to the movies, starbucks, panera, ann taylor loft, bath & body works etc. It's a safe area for sure.

hmm I'm trying to think where else-- I know downtown Desplaines has some newer apartment or maybe condos- not sure how they are priced though. That would be also on the metra so close to visit the city, I'm not sure how commute to work would be. Also have you guys looked at deerfeild or Northbrook at all? They would be close to BG/Lincolnshire as well. Plus I want to say they have easy train access to the city as well. Sorry I'm just trying to think of lots of ideas to help you out. I can tell you some places you probably won't want to consider if that might be of any help?
