When looking at a map, I see train tracks running between Elgin and Naperville, but all I can find on Metra are lines running to and from Chicago. Is there a way to take a train between Elgin and Naperville without going through Chicago first? My dad is in Elgin on business, and we're trying to figure out how he might be able to come see us by train. We're new to the area and don't know the trains very well yet.

Thanks for any help you can give!

No way to go directly unless you catch a ride on a freight train. All commuter rails go through Chicago, although there is talk of a suburb-to-suburb line in the future. Best bet is to rent a car.

Ah, those are freight lines? Boo. A suburb-to-suburb train would be great someday.

Thanks for the response.

This project is supposedly on the radar.
Metra Connects : Proposed New Starts
It was funded at the Federal level, but the State can't get its act together. Well, what do you expect when the previous two governors have felony convictions? Maybe it can be saved; it would improve travel and create hundreds of construction jobs. In the mean time I'm sure he will make the effort to visit. Grandchildren are a powerful draw!

If i'm not mistaken the route they were proposing was an abandoned train line that was bought last year by a canadian freight line.

That's the route, but it was certainly not abandoned. It was the Elgin, Joliet & Eastern Railroad and the section between the Elgin and Naperville areas saw a small handful of freight trains each day. Now with the merger with the Canadian railroad, traffic is up and it'll be more challenging to add Metra service (and keep it on schedule).
