I will be moving to Chicago from metro Detroit at the end of March and will be working in Elk Grove Village. I plan on renting before purchasing a home . . . would like to get a feel for the area first. Any suggestions for apartment life near EGV for a professional single female, late 40's w/o dependents? I've been reading through some of the postings from people relocating to Chicago and I must say they are quite interesting! Not to mention confusing to someone new to the city and surrounding area. Like most other posts, looking for a safe place to live, with good night life, shopping, restaurants, etc.

First thing that comes to mind is Schaumburg.

What's your price range?

I'm looking at price ranging is from $1200 - 1400, would like a newer complex w/garage. A couple of my new co-workers suggested Schaumburg as well. I found an apt. complex on-line in Bloomingdale that looks pretty nice. Any feedback on the Bloomingdale area?

Schaumburg will have alot more to do than Bloomingdale. Bloomingdale is nice but from what you described Schaumburg would be a better fit. You might also try Arlington Heights. Schaumburg has one of our area's biggest malls, some night-life and restaurants galore. Arlington Heights has a really nice downtown area with restaurants, bars, shops and theatres. Both areas are really close to EGV. In Schaumburg you might want to look into a condo/townhome - there's a nice unit in Lexington Green (around Meachum & Schaumburg) for $1150 that has 2Br/2BA, its own 1car garage with driveway for additional parking, an in-unit washer/dryer and the complex has a pool. There is a similar complex that you can get a 1 bedroom for 900. Send me a private message if you want additional information.

IMO Bloomingdale is the better choice. Traffic is less, there is just as much shopping (Stratford Square Mall and surrounding area), PLENTY to do, and its more open feeling than Schaumburg. Bloomingdale has some wonderful blue collar neighborhoods and stunning multi-million dollar homes. There is also a Lifetime Fitness and TONS of restaurants. Personally, I think Bloomingdale offers just as much as Schaumburg, for a little less price and you get a better quality of life. If you have any more questions let me know.
