Actually, every part of the Edens Expressway is part of I-94, as is the Edens Spur. The part that "forks off" near the Botanical Gardnes is U.S. Highway 41. And the school districts along 41 are also great until you get into the North Chicago/Waukegan area. Metra access is also available to just about every North Shore town. North would be your most convenient direction for suburban school districts if you live in Lincoln park, though you could get to the near Western suburbs pretty easily as well by driving. Otherwise you will have to go downtown first to get a train to the Western Suburbs.

Oak Park and River Forest schools are great and within easy access to L/Metra riders.

You will have to go to the Loop on the Brown Line and then transfer to the Green Line out to Oak Park/River Forest, but it will not take much more or less time than going north to Evanston.
