Tinley Park would be Bloomington basically identically, and Orland Park with its smaller downtown and higher end homes would be Normal. La Grange Road is equivelent to Veterans Parkway, and I-80 and Harlem Ave in Tinley Park is totally the west side of Bloomington. Heck the two even both have Cracker Barrels right off their interchanges. (Market St and I55 & I80 and Harlem)Only thing both Cook County towns are missing are two huge Universities in each of them.

Yeah, the only thing they are missing are the universities and umm...two FORTUNE 500 Companies!

It's hard to say which Chicago suburb could survive as its own city if it were placed in the middle of nowhere because the economies of all Chicago Suburbs are linked to or have been influenced by Chicago. This includes Joliet, Aurora, Elgin and Waukegan. Though, I do believe that these towns are the best candidates. They existed before Chicago emerged as the economic juggernaut that it is today. Take Joliet, since its inception in 1852 it has transitioned through prosperous and tough economic times. It had its own limestone quarry, steel factories, wall paper industry, ect. It's always been an important port because of its location on the Des Plaines River. So, in the past it was able to support itself, independent of Chicago. Nowadays, there is a lot of auto racing and riverboat gambling; both support the Joliet economy. It's obvious that the presence of these industries is directly related to its location in Chicagoland -a market of over 9 million people. In additon to those towns I think Evanston could make it because of Northwestern. Then again, would that university be all that it is without its close proximity to Chicago. Tex?IL? has raised an interesting discussion.

Not sure why Elgin doesn't count. It is a city on its own and has been for quite a while (since the 1800's). We've alway been a major manufacturing/employment center, a downtown undergoing major renovation, our own cultural attractions (symphony, theater, opera, etc.), and diverse population.

I agree w/you. Elgin is a very good candidate for the reasons you stated. There are also several colleges/universities in the town...
