Just wondering: How full are the rush hour trains to downtown from these towns? Are seats always available? Thanks!

My husband used to take the Metra from the D zone which is in Winnetka - the further North you are going downtown the more likely you are to have a seat. Coming home from the city it's best to get on the train first to ensure a seat.

Hi Calidreemer,

Thanks! Did your husband always/usually get a seat going downtown during rush hour? We are considering different suburbs - and having to stand during a commute is a deal breaker... Going back home - I am more flexible wrt timing, so can arrive early at the station.

Its usually not a problem. Some trains are express from certain stations and they always have seats available. All-stops are slower and you might occasionally have to stand.

Seats are available 95% of the time, both ways. On unusually crowded Ravinia nights, the trains are crowded, but if getting on in Chicago, it's not a problem.
