I am moving to the Skokie, IL, area for a new job. I am a single, female, 40-something executive with back problems that prevent climbing a lot of stairs. I'm moving from sunny North Carolina to chilly Chicago!

I plan to rent for a while until I learn the area, but want a safe, luxurious rental in a hip area with walkable shopping, restaurants, culture that is close to Skokie to minimize my commute.

I need at least a 2 bedroom (preferably 2 with a den or 3 bedrooms) with few to no stairs and INDOOR, off-street parking. It needs to be QUIET, have other professionals (not just students), and be in a SAFE building/ area!

As to areas, a relative from Chicago said I should look at the Evanston Chicago Street area and the new high-rise apartment complexes there.

Does anyone out there have any recommendations for:
1) fun towns/ neighborhoods that are great for professional singles?
2) specific luxury apartment complexes or rentals that meet my needsl?

Any and all recommendations are needed and very welcome! Thanks in advance...

You relative was correct - downtown Evanston is the easy and obvious recommendation for you. While there are certainly students there, Evanston doesn't really exude a "college town" vibe; it's a very popular choice for families and singles of all types (there's plenty to read about Evanston on these boards).

There are several upscale/luxury developments that will meet your needs; while most are condos, you will probably find a large number of condos for rent in those buildings. I can think of three upscale apartment buildings, though are probably many smaller buildings with nice units as well. Here are the larger buildings I can name that would meet your needs:

Condos
Optima Tower
Optima Views
Optima Horizons
Sherman Plaza
Church Street Station

Apartment Buildings
Evanston Place
Park Evanston
The Reserve

You will pay a fortune for a 3 bedroom in some of those buildings, but the indoor parking and easy commute make it a perfect fit.

Depending on how "busy" of a downtown you like, you may want to consider near Downtown Skokie or Morton Grove. Not "hip" but some restaurants and stores you can walk to. Perhaps something near Old Orchard mall?
Just some ideas. I think Downtown Evanston is pretty cool. But it is costly-see the thread on Evanston property tax.
