Tough to say, sadly. I see quite a few African-Americans up in that area, but I have no idea how theyre treated. Id like to imagine that you'd be fine overall, but cant rule out the occasional idiot who might give you a hard time for no reason at all other than theyre retarded. Have you considered Elgin? There is a much larger African-American community there, but the town isnt as nice overall.

From the time I've spent in Crystal Lake (and its not a huge amount, but the in laws are nearby) its got more transplants from out of town, new constrcution/families, and my impression is that it would be more racially tolerant than other some other communities in McHenry County. I hope some NW locals add their thoughts!

I haven't heard anything bad about Crystal Lake. I would say just try it for a few months and see how it goes. You're just renting, so its a lot easier to get out of than a mortgage.

I am AA and I know an AA family that has lived in Crystal Lake since 1980...kids are grown and married...they never spoke of any problems.

Well, the African-American population here is a very, almost unnoticeably small minority. However, I wouldn't say that because of that, it is not "African-American friendly." By that question, what exactly do you mean? There is little racism here (outward anyways.) People usually feel free to be themselves here, no matter what that entails. Good luck on your search.
