Well Ive lived on the East Side of Aurora for 30 years and I'd would have to say it not all that bad.If your concerned about spending too much it could be a great alternative house purchase.A little street smarts can actually be good for kids these days.I graduated from East High (1996) and soon found myself meeting others that went to schools like WV and NV. For those that don't know they are really new and quite good as far as academics goes. That being said I noticed alot of them were into heavy drugs like Heroin,Cocaine,XTC, and prescription drugs. Now Im not saying all of them but when going to EAST I only encountered Marajuana and of course Beer.Shootings seemed alot more frequent then (1992-1996) compared to now.My feelings are this if you are there for your kids and are a good parent your kids will be fine.If you overspend on a Mansion in Naperville that you cant afford, and have to work 80 hours a week.Well lets just say your kids might live in Naperville but may be making daily trips to score drugs in Aurora. For anyone familar with the area I live on the same block as O.L.G.C. which is a Catholic School on 5th Street.

Default East or West?

Born and raised in East Aurora in the unincorporated township of Marywood. There are good places to live on both sides of the river. If you want to send your kids to school with predominantly Mexican kids (70%), go for the East Side. Nothing wrong with that. West Aurora tends to be a little more white and even dropped out of the renowned "Upstate 8" many years ago to try to be more "Naperville-like", but they have their problems too. The Catholic schools are excellent if that is affordable for you. On all the Aurora-bashing...Naperville used to be a tiny little village and grew very large around the tech-bubble in the 90s. For awhile I think it even out-sized Aurora in population. Naperville is a suburb of Aurora. Get over yourselves! Aurora has the best pizza in the world. Chicago's "style" pales in comparison. See Ach-n-Lou's or Tony Weeds or Luigi's or Garios for proof. Bottomline is that your dollar will go far if you aren't afraid of city living. The farther you get from the river on either side of town, the greater the prices/taxes and distance from the train station. Downtown is making a comeback...again. Check out the urban renewal. Safe to walk downtown again? I'd say yes. As far as gang crime goes, it pretty much stays confined to the "hoods." You'll know a hood when you see it--just avoid them. Good Luck!

I lived in the fox valley/aurora area for 5 years and am actually moving back there in the next few months. I really love the area. Granted, I was on the east side of Aurora near route 59.... which falls into the Naperville school district. This area is great and there are a lot of affordable single family homes south of 75th/89th just west of route 59. Some areas fall into Naperville's school district, others do not. Home values seem to drop about 20k if you are just outside Naperville's school district, which is good if you have no kids and are not planning. If you go a bit west towards downtown there can be some sketchy areas. Not too bad, really. I used to drive through it all the time (via New York ave) to visit some friends who rented a loft in the downtown area a few blocks from the casino. I appreciate the diversity.

i lived in aurora since the time i arrived from my country. i didn't like the down town, didn't like that it is predominantly hispanic population, ugly sceneries.

if you like outlet malls, they have one. i lived near it and even worked there. the best place to live is what poe said.. the fox valley area.. i have 3 relatives living there. well actually they ALL lived there for quite some time. the area on the aurora/naperville border is good. at least your neighbor (naperville) is topping the list of best to live in.

well i moved to arlington hts. and is now living in barrington.. and i cant wait to move to vegas or anywhere that doesn't snow... im tired of snow!

Hmmm, well considering that Naperville is older than Aurora, I think youre full of it. Secondly, speaking of "get over yourself".... you claim that Aurora's pizza is better than Chicago's? Wow. If I were you Id quickly pull the plug on your membership to City-Data and go bury your head in the sand before the sh*tstorm hits. Believe me, its comin.

I'm looking at a home on Claim St., mostly because it's a beautiful house and close to the Metra and Roundhouse. How bad is the crime these days in that area? (East side, downtown). There is Lincoln park nearby - I'd probably take my dog there. I am also looking at some West side homes in the Tanner Historic District. ( I love old homes!)Nothing I am interested in and firts in my price range is in Batavia, Aurora, or Geneva. Help! I don't want to move to a high crime area and get robbed, raped or worse!

My husband and I moved to Aurora 3 weeks ago after spending approximately 7 months looking for a home in Aurora. We had an excellent realtor who knew which neighborhoods would be a good fit for us and which ones to avoid. We basically ruled out the near east side due to the schools, and the far east side due to the cookie-cutter suburban sprawl look that we don't care for. We ended up buying on the southwest side, near Orchard Rd. and the bike/nature trail. We couldn't be happier with our decision! Quiet neighborhood, nice neighbors, lots of shopping and outdoor activities...it's been great so far.

Do your research and decide what's best for you. My husband and I spent lots of time driving through neighborhoods, looking up crime stats, and evaluating schools; driving through the neighborhoods definitely helped narrow down our list of houses that looked good on paper (or on computer screen). It seems like most of the crime is in a very small area of an otherwise great city.

Stay FAR away from that area. My old church used to be Claim St. Baptist church, I know the area quite well. IN fact a few years ago I went over there to see the area.... gangbanger-ridden, graffitti-covered, not very nice at all. I saw homes that were covered in graffitti, boarded up homes, etc. Seriously, that place went WAAAAAAAAAY downhill since I was a kid, sadly.

Thanks for letting me know. That's what I figured...

How is the Tanner Historical District now? I walked through the old Garfield Goose house and was interested in buying, but there is a LOT of work to be done and I don't have that kind of money!

I'm looking at other homes nearby. It seems westside is safer than eastside in the downtown area....am I correct?

well besides the far east side, aurora is bad. i know it may offend some of the residents, but face it. the east side of aurora is about 80% in poverty, from when i checked a few months ago. thats kind of alot. i just recently drove through most of the east side, and i didnt see a single white person. not only that, but almost every house i saw was tiny, run down, and just looked like the stereo-typical ghettos. and maby some of the reason ur saying that its friendly on the east is because ur mexican in a 85% mexican neighborhood. and as for the west side, ive seen and heard about lots of bad projects within it, and people i know say that you dont want to be there, and emphasize how its full of gang violence, and other unsafe problems. the west is supposedly nicer than the east tho
