My husband is starting a job at Abbvie. How is the commute from the communities like Vernon Hills? Especially in the winter...

That commute is easy. Really easy. There are multiple routes to use as well if needed.

Keep in mind there is a huge infrastructure to support in Chicago and a lot of experience/resources dealing with various weather related issues. You guys will be fine

Chicagoland is a very large area, and AbbVie has multiple locations. Vernon Hills is well situated within Lake County. Snow slows things down, but it's not much different from inclement weather anywhere else. Central Vernon Hills to AbbVie in Mettawa is about 10-15 minutes with traffic.
