When you hear the name Aurora, most people think of a few things:
"Waynes World"
Casino
Dangerous
Far Away
Hispanic

Will it ever be desirable to have an Aurora address? I know there are a lot of plans in the making for the downtown over a 10 year period.
All the satellite cities from Chicago(Aurora, Elgin, Waukegan, Joliet) are all trying different things to improve both image and to attract individuals.

So what does Aurora have to do? Can it be done?

Aurora is improving, slowly. Lots of new areas in town are very nice, and to many, desirable. The downtown is getting better too, although also slowly. Places like Hollywood Casino, the revamped Paramount Theatre, Sci-Tech, Walter Payton's Roundhouse, etc, have boosted interest. The area immediately east of downtown is still rather nasty, I dont drive through it unless I absolutely have to. Far east Aurora is very nice, especially places like White Eagle, and areas around the Westfield Shoppingtown.

the city of aurora keeps trying to improve its image. I know there are plans for some other big restaurant/entertainment venue. I don't recall the time frame. I think when you take into consideration that the population is approaching 200,000, it could be worse. the orchard road corridor is finally moving along. they are opening a new hotel by the home depot, a buffalo wild wings is supposed to open in may.

my wife and I live on the east side of town by naperville, it is a very nice area.

Around downtown aurora has a tremendous amount of potential... the homes are older and need tlc, but it seems no one cares. It is mainly hispanic, sadly that scares most people away from investing in homes there, hindering the "renovation".

I agree Rescue Brew. That fear unfortuanlty does do that. Also most individuals on the East Side of Aurora will say I am from Naperville/Aurora area or say they are from Naperville.

The east side does have some really nice neighborhoods and its proximity to Naperville is the part that sells it.
Downtown Aurora is just a mess right now. I see the condos for sale and know they are pumping a lot of money, but it will take an awful lot.

The west side of Aurora is more middle class and is nice. Orchard Road will be key in it's development. Also its neighbor to the North in North Aurora has a huge bit of land that right now has a Target/Penny's etc. It will also have a Best Buy.

Sgrresident is correct in that south back in Aurora on Orchard a Buffalo Wild Wings is set to open this summer and some other retail.

Also someone made a good point that it is hard to have an overrall nice suburb when the population is almost 200k. Here is hoping it's downtown makes the right decisions.

I dont think its the Hispanics that "scare" people away, its the crime, gangs and drugs in that part of town that do.
