I tried searching a little for this, but I am also new to this site. Sorry if this is a repeat.

My husband and I are considering a move to either Montgomery or Sugar Grove. We are considering the Ryland homes in Montgomery or the William Ryan homes in Montgomery. For Sugar Grove we are interested in the Kimball Hill homes. I saw some discussion on the KH homes in Sugar Grove.

We have NO experience with either of these towns, we would be taking our first trip down there this weekend. We have a small (soon to be growing) family and we want a family friendly subdivision (and neighborhood). We currently live in Elgin (my brother and sister live close), but we want a bigger house for our money. We want a safe area though.
We also have to consider schools as we would ideally like to live in this house for 10 - 15 years.

If anyone can help with me with some more information I would greatly appreciate it.

Or if there are other towns around that area with new construction in the mid to high $200's that would be appreciated.

Thank you for your help!

If you want safer, Sugar Grove would probably be the best bet. Parts of Montgomery butt up against the nasty side of Aurora. I have a cousin who lives in a new house on the far NW side of Montgomery and its nice there, but the rest of Montgomery is questionable. Sugar Grove just seems to me to be a nicer overall community. Both are growing quickly, but I just prefer Sugar Grove.

We have lived in sugar grove for 20 years and we really love it here. If you are looking for safe, sugar grove is. not much in the way of crime. We are a growing community, our recent census has us just under 9,000. home prices really vary from low 200,000 to one million! some complaints are that we don't have enough retail. this is true. However, we do have two grocery stores(jewel and aldi). other shopping is close by. only `15 minutes to the shopping on orchard road in aurora, 15 to 20 minutes to get to the shopping on randall in geneva commons. Our Library district is going to break ground on a new 27,000 sq ft library and the kaneland school district just passed a referendum to construct a new middle school on harter road in sugar grove. Waubonsee Community College is in Sugar grove and offers many programs/studies/non-credit classes. The sugar grove park district is small, and we don't really have our own facilities, however children's team sports are well organized and run. They also offer day care at the elementary schools throughout the kaneland school district for before and after school care.
The sugar grove chamber of commerce isa growing organization and had around 180 chamber members last year. There are numerous community groups that are always looking for volunteers. We are looking forward to many new offices to house doctors, etc. these are currently under construction. We have a couple different dentists and chiropractors in town right now. Our vet is in the process of building a new animal hospital. We don't have places to go out to eat except for the fireside grille. and a couple of local breakfast spots. there are plans for a walgreens and a dunkin' donuts. there is talk of a private restaurant owner looking to build a new restaurant. We have great people who work in the village office and they are glad to answer any questions you may have. our public works guys do a great job on snowplowing etc. and please remember when you come to sugar grove on Rt 47, 30, 56 or Galena Blvd, that these are roads that belong to the state of illinois and that is why they are in such disrepair!!
I hope this helps raise the bar for sugar grove.

You may also want to check out Oswego and Yorkville, which are also in that general area and have lots of new construction in your price range. Also, be aware that Kimball Hill Homes has had some widely publicized financial troubles. You could end up in a sticky situation if you have a home under construction and they end up filing for bankruptcy. I experienced this first hand as I purchased a new Neumann home right before their bankruptcy was filed in October.

Sugar Grove is vastly better than Montgomery(IMO). Even with it's lack of things to do, the area is developed better, has better access to transportation, and much safer. Once again, just my opinion.

I echo the comments above, SG would be the better of the two. If you do chose Montgomery find a place in the small section that goes to Kaneland schools.

Montgomery is on the rise. I prefer this location to Sugar Grove. I would also advise buying with William Ryan Homes. They have an excellent reputation and attention to detail. The location of their Orchard Prairie North community is perfect. You are minutes from shopping, and transportation. They are in the Oswego District 308 School system which has an excellent reputation. Ryland Homes has split communities and majority of it go to Yorkville Schools. Plus it is huge with over 400 homes built there I believe?

I have visited both communities and found the sales staff at William Ryan Helpful and the customer service was excellent! Since my visit to Ryland I have not had one phone call or e-mail returned. So I could imagine the treatment I'd receive if I purchased there.

Sugar Grove is very far out, I think it relies on town "recognition, but there has yet to be any development out there and buying homes really seems to be the only thing to do their. I like a location with convience.
