Hi,

I'll be interning with Argonne for the summers and am looking for cheap housing in the vicinity. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA

I have relatives that work at ANL and they tell me that there is generally housing provided for short term internships -- Student Research Participation Program | Argonne National Laboratory

I also know that the shuttle run from UofC to ANL is restricted "The shuttle may not be used for the purpose of commuting to work. The purpose of the shuttle is to promote collaboration between colleagues at the University of Chicago and Argonne by making it easier for them to visit one another and attend seminars, conference and other events at both campuses."

The average rent for even a studio within a 10+ mile radius of ANL is well above $700/mo and neither month-to-month nor "shared room" situations are particularly abundant, though some of the msg boards available to lab employees do occasionally list longer term rentals.

Any of the "lower cost" rental complexes near the lab will almost certainly not be eager to accept short term tenants. There are some complexes that are somewhat notorious for the kind of tenants they accept and it might not be a great idea to shop solely on price if you value peace / safety...

What sort of budget would you be targeting? How about acceptable commute radius? Length of internship?

Default Further details

Hi,

Thank you very much for the details.

I'm looking forward to any options below or equal to 800$/mo as housing with 900$/mo is available at Argonne itself. My internship will last for 3 months and I might convert my internship into a longer co-op.

Now since I don't have a car, I'm looking for a location within a preferably walkable distance or someplace having easy transit access.

Thank You.

Default Hinsdale Lake Apts

Hi, thanks for the info. I'm guessing you were hinting at Hinsdale Lake apartments. They look pretty nice.

However, I'm seeing a lot of negative reviews about the place commenting on the safety. Are they true? I'm asking this mainly because I myself live in Lake Meadows, an apt complex which is also notorious for negative reviews, but so far everything has worked well for me.

Thanks.

There really is nothing within walking distance. It looks like there is one PACE bus that goes there, but then you would have to live along that route which would really limit your options.
