My husband just received a position in Lake Forest and will be commuting until we sell our home in Batavia. This is a 60 mile commute each way. He is working the traditional day hours of 8:30 start and 4:30 end. We are putting our house on the market in two weeks, but know that the house may sit for some time given the housing climate. Any tips on making this commute more bearable?

I teach in one night in DeKalb and work in Glen Ellyn so we are considering relocating in the Schaumburg, Palatine, or surrounding areas. We have a 2 year old, so we hope to move to a town with great park district programs and schools. We know very little about these communities having lived in Naperville/Batavia for the past decade. Thanks for your thoughts.

Batavia to Lake Forest is going to be one rough commute to say the least. The two main factors that you have to consider is the time that he'll be leaving the house, and also the weather conditions. If he leaves early enough, maybe his commute will be swifter. In the middle of snowstorm conditions, however, forget about it. In that type of scenario he'd probably be better off taking a super early inbound Metra train (Union Pacific West) from Geneva to Chicago, and then a Union Pacific North outbound (northbound) train to Lake Forest, and then cabbing it to work, and then take the same route back to Geneva / Batavia. That seriously might be his only way to make it to work on time & unscathed in the middle of severe blizzard conditions.

If weather conditions are good and he leaves early enough (my guess is somewhere between 6 AM & 7 AM, but I'm not sure what the ideal departure time would be to tell you the truth), I think he might be able to manage somehow, although the commute may still drive him insane. Good luck!
