My new job is located in the Loop, heart of Chicago. I need to find a place to rent where the rent is hopefully under $1,400 including parking for my car. Needs to be within walking distance to train or car to get me downtown. Can anyone please give me advice?

That doesn't narrow it down much. What's your maximum travel time? Within 50 miles? Do schools matter? Hobbies?

Thank you for responding! I am single, no kids. My only true concerns are 1) MAX $1400 including car parking 2) not in a bad area 2)close to public transportation of some kind to the center of downtown.

Where in the loop? That makes a difference. Do you want to be in the city or the suburbs? You could do Street parking and live in Logan Square. Or Rogers Park. Or Wheaton. We need much more info to help!

Well, Elmhurst would fit the bill:

Close to downtown Elmhurst nestled in the Woods of Graue Woods.

Location! Location! Location!

@ RJA29 Downtown on W. Washington St. I would love to be in the city close to work but the rent including parking car is soooooo high. My top-most limit is $1400/mo. So its a balance between high rent in city or less rent in suburbs plus public transportation time and money. I apologize about not having all the information ready, it's a very sudden employment change and I'm not familiar with all the areas. Since I couldn't get a place together this quickly, I will have 30 days of temporary housing so that I can do more research.

Thank you to each person who has taken the time to respond and make suggestions, I will be looking into all given.

Do you have to keep your car? Either get rid of it or move to a north side neighborhood and rely on street parking. I never have a problem finding a spot within a block of my apartment. I live between Lincoln Square and Andersonville with a bus route a block away and a 15 minute walk to a brown line stop. The bus goes right to the L stop. I lived in the suburbs for years and I usually use my car just on the weekend.

What kind of neighborhood would you like to live in?

What is your ideal commute time? Train/bus ok?

Note that taking the Metra will add up to $150/mo. Why not live with a roommate in Logan Square and do street parking?

A monthly CTA pass isn't free either though; that is going to cost $100.
