When my husband, cat and I moved back to the Chicago area many springs ago, we ended up in Forest Park. (Although we had a house.) It's one of the less expensive options you listed, and if you don't have kids, it is a great choice -- you have the easy access to downtown, plus all the access to Oak Park without Oak Park prices.

Dumb question: Why would you want to move to the Chicagoland area? Are you oblivious to the problems of the area? If I were you, I'd stick to the Twin Cities, or consider Madison, WI, Des Moines, or Indy. Chicagoland? no thank you.

Phoenix is a great city. There's much more to it than what the typical tourist might see (resorts, strip malls and tract homes) but I won't go into that since it isn't the Phoenix forum.
