The wife and I will have spent almost 2 years in the city and we've decided we would like to consider living the suburban life.

We want to find a suburb that is good for up-and-coming adults (late twenties) with good access to overground trains (e.g. metra) for getting to jobs downtown, good selection of mainstream shops and restaurants, affordable (thinking rent terms about $1200 a month), peaceful neighbourhoods, but with access to some bars if the occasion asks for it.

What are we thinking?

Wheaton, La Grange, Elmhurst, Arlington Heights, Oak Park, Evanston, Park Ridge, Wilmette, Highland Park, Libertyville and Naperville all have large, lively, pedestrian-friendly downtown districts. Geneva too if you're ok with a long commute. Downers Grove and Glen Ellyn are also worth a look. Your budget will be you greatest limiting factor. I would cast a wide net.

Wheaton: Downtown Wheaton Directory

Disclaimer: My wife and I moved to Wheaton from the city 2 years ago, looking for the same, and we love our new town.

I have to admit that I'm very out of touch with rental rates for apartments, but most decent single family home rents seemed to be about double your budget in the nicer suburbs mentioned by holl1ngsworth above. But if you're alright with an apartment, you can probably make this work.

I think we'd just be looking for a starter place- no major thrills but basic amenities. Thanks everyone for your help. I'll look at those suggested.

Hey guys,

Alright, after some more extensive research, I've whittled it down to a top 4 (in no particular order):

1) Wheaton
2) Wilmette
3) Northbrook
4) Lisle

My wife would like to find a job in a university setting (her field is Academic Advising), so Northwestern looks pretty promising and thus Northbrook and Wilmette came up. Evanston seems pretty student-heavy and quite expensive too! I am a Personal Trainer, with acting/writing as a hobby- so for me places with gyms seem to be everywhere and maybe a good local theatre too.

Lisle and Wheaton were two other options we thought were fitting for us, on the west side of things.

Any thoughts?

I heard from various sources that it was becoming a bit of a "college town" with loud house parties etc. Quote me if I'm wrong! Also surprisingly expensive.
