Chicago isn't really that great for low end jobs or science jobs. It's just got a relatively low cost of living for a city of it's size.

Honestly, the best science jobs are in the UK, Germany and Switzerland but that's probably not useful advice.

Given the criteria, NC, TX, Seattle area are better options than Chicago and still relatively cheap but are much further away than a day's drive from Cleveland. The Bay area and San Diego have good science related jobs but are very expensive.

There are a lot of science jobs in NJ and Philly which are about an 8 hour drive from Cleveland. Philly is cheap but NJ is not.

IMO Chicago is ok but moreso if you have a great career lined up. I don't know if it's a great place to have a stop gap job and be trying to sort out what you're going to do next. Personally I find NYC and California (SF in particular) nicer places to be broke.

The best city for a specific job is a city where you have actually landed that job. Find your job first, and then choose the city.
