We are transferring back to Chicago land area. My husband works by Midway Airport. We are looking into west and southwest suburbs of Chicago. Does anyone have any insight/opinions on good neighborhoods to live in? We are both 30 and expecting our first baby this month. We'd like something with young families, good schools and safe community, yet still lively (good bar and restaurant scene). Thanks for your help!

Are you more of an old house or new house person? Does the idea of an 100 year old house on a tree-lined street walkable to a "Main Street" downtown appeal to you, or are you more of a post-war cul-de-sac type of person?

La Grange... " young families, good schools and safe community, yet still lively (good bar and restaurant scene) " ~ to the T of what we wanted, we are also young fam, have 9 month old. DTLG is def alive for a burb... Best part is so MANY options and family friendly. Its completely kool to take your baby here inside (our outside as we prefer) and have drinks/dinner. Visit and see for yourselves.

cheers

Budget, schools(which you kind of answered), nightlife, etc? There are a lot great family friendly suburbs in that area. If you are planning on going near Midway a lot I would stay along 55 but still includes a lot of options.

La Grange and Downers Grove are nice towns... La Grange is certainly more convenient to Midway, but it's not exactly affordable for everyone. It will be hard to give recommendations until we have a budget and more information about preferences for neighborhood type, community attributes, etc. If they can only afford a $200,000 house, there's no need to recommend La Grange.

Well, if they're looking in the Southwest, I would say Orland Park, Tinley Park, Oak Forest, and Palos if they are around 250k price range. Obviously if their budget is larger, I would suggest other places.
