My family will be moving to Chicago with a special needs (significant disabilities: low tone, nonverbal, hearing impaired) 1st grader. Could anyone enlighten us on THE BEST school district for special education. We can reside anywhere! I saw an old (several years) post about Naperville D203, is that still a reputable district for special needs. Private schooling is an option too. Thank you.

As a Special Ed teacher, I can tell you that low incidence disabilities have different priorities based on the district. As such, I would really recommend that you visit these schools and see first hand. 203 is good, but I would still make a visit.

I went through the paces with my special needs son in various NW suburb school districts.
District 300 was good for it's early programs.

District U-46 fared 'ok', but they have several classes in different schools.
Nathan Hale school through Dist. 54 in Schaumburg was very good-they have self-contained classrooms as well as integrated. Really pleased there.
Dist.'s 46 & 47 in Crystal Lake area also have several special education classes in various schools. I was extremely pleased with them until my son's needs exceeded those able to be met in their programs and his education was transferred to SEDOM Center (Special Education District Of McHenry County). At first it seems a wonderful self-contained center however, the need to hover over the teachers/therapists/aides to ensure your child's safety and educational needs are met and appropriate led me to pull my son out of any program and home school.

As skeach101 said: if you can visit the recommended program WITH your child, I highly encourage you to do so. It was 10+ years ago when my son was in the SEDOM program and longer since he was at Nathan Hale so things may have changed. Good luck!

To find out about several of the schools on the North Shore, the following website is always a good place to start.
