I'm relocating from Utah to attend school in the suburbs. I'll be finishing my degree at COD (which I began 7 years ago) and then attending Elmhurst College, North Central College or UIC depending on financial aid. I am looking for a DuPage county town where I can find a one bedroom apartment for $600/mo. In online searches the prices seem to start at $700, which I find hard to believe. Any input on the cheapest rent in DuPage county would be of great help. Thanks.

Believe it. Rent here is pretty costly, especially in DuPage. Ive paid over a grand for a small one bedroom before. Its highly doubtful youll find anything for around $600, unless its in a bad neighborhood or something. Our cheapest rent we found was $630 in some old apartments in St. Charles, we hated every minute of it. Its worth it to pony up the extra dough and live somewhere nice, trust me on that.

Welcome to Dupage! I suggest you consider a roommate or someone that will share their condo/apt. Check out www.Craigslist.com for sublets or roommates. It will be tough to find something under $700 that is a stand-alone, but a 2 bedroom condo for $1200 or under is do-able thus reaching your $600 level. Plus you end up splitting utilities as well.

My son got the bright idea he and his GF wanted to move in together and get an apartment. for a studio, the cheapest they could find was $800

I figured closer to 1200 for anything good.

yes -- housing in DuPage is thru the roof.

any idea what those apts across the street from COD runs?? what a convenient location. [the ones on Fawell Blvd, north side of the campus]

Thanks all for the input. Thanks Windy City John for the options. That's the range I've seen, although quite low for Wheaton and Glen Ellyn. I've seen most of the cheapest rentals in Addison, Bensenville, and Villa Park (some in the 685 range). So I was just hoping that people would know if these were the cheapest areas, and if the non advertised apartments ('for rent' in the window and nothing else) were going a little cheaper. Thank you all for your help.

I've just received my acceptance to Loyola, so if my grades are good enough to get some good financial aid(which they should be) I'll be looking into the Edgewater/Uptown/Ravenswood/Lincoln Square areas of Chicago (since everyone has bad things to say about Rogers Park). Thanks again.

ah... congrats on Loyola!!

and i have to comment, personally, i'd think the apts in Bensenville or Addison would be pretty "low income" [scary place to live] I live near both of those towns. not sure on Villa Park though -- I'd think pretty much the same.
