Hello,

My family (husband and 1 year old) are moving from Michigan to the Northwest suburbs on Chicago. My husband will have the territory from Barrington IL to about 30-40mile radius. Which suburbs are best to live in for families? Barrington, Crystal Lake, Libertyville, Arlington Heights etc. Which are safe, family oriented and fun things to do? Thanks so much in advance!

Pretty much anything in the Northwest suburbs are safe. As for where to live that depends on your budget, what kind of community you'd like, schools. Pretty much the father from Chicago you get the more affordable it is. Most of the subburbs on your list have at least above average schools.

For that price, I think you should look at Crystal Lake, which is a great family town with nice amenities IMO. It is farther west which may result in longer commutes. I doubt you will find any suitable rental homes in the other 3 towns in that price range.

aye Crystal Lake may come off as a family-orientated community and it is but there is a lot of drugs in the high schools especially Crystal Lake South/Crystal Lake Central. Lots of weed, ecstasy, and heroin going around the area. It is easy enough to avoid but if you have young impressionable teenagers in the area be careful about letting them hang out with certain people because you can get caught up real quick.

I lived in Crystal Lake in the mid-2000's. I really enjoyed living in a town that felt more like a small midwestern town, but totally in reach of the big city. The commuter RR runs right through town. A small town feel in the midst of close to a 10 million metro area. Perfect location. The areas south of Crystal are more suburban in feel, such as Lake In The Hills, parts of Algonquin, etc.

There's lots of drugs in all high schools, including private schools.
