Leaving for Missouri in a few weeks, coming from the west burbs..I heard there is major construction on I-55 between I-80 and Arsenal Road, so I'm thinking I should detour somehow....

is it worth it to go any one of these routes or should we just suck it up and sit in the miserable gridlock???

1. 355 to 80 to 47 to 55
2. 88 to 39 to 55
3. 355 to 80 to 39 to 55

Thanks!

Pretty sure the only route to really consider to avoid the Arsenal Rd backups is #2...

Are you OK with tolls?

Has the construction traffic increased the last 3 weeks? If not, it's no big deal. I was through there mid-morning and returned back mid-afternoon and the only gridlock I experienced was a slowdown on the way back due to it being a Friday combined with a thunderstorm. The construction is just south of the Des Plaines river to about a mile or 2 south of Arsenal Road.

Traffic is much worse, down to one lane both directions near the Des Plaines river bridge. Traffic northbound the other day was back up from River rd (mile 241) to Bluff rd exit (mile 247). That 6 miles took me a half hour to complete. Southbound is backed up from Bluff rd to around Arsenal, so about 3 miles. I don't think a detour makes sense though, it is too many extra miles to be worth it.

Went through there about a week ago ... wow. Slowwwwwww. That said, if you're hoping for the fastest route stick to the major highways. You nailed a few of your options and routes well. But if you're looking for side roads to bypass the area, it's possible. You just hit more small towns and lose a bit of time circumventing the construction. Let me know if you need back road info ... I'm a local boy!! Best of luck no matter,

I just experienced the misery that is this construction over the weekend. The trip from Normal to the northwest suburbs usually takes me 2 hours & 15 mins. On Friday it took me 4 hours. The entirety of the extra time was spent in the 5 miles between Coal City and N River Rd where I finally got off. I've been in many bad traffic situations, but this was by far the worst. I wasn't going to risk running into that on my return trip, and the detour I took this afternoon was a breeze and got me home in 2 hours & 30 mins - I wouldn't have been able to beat that on I-55 with the construction even if it wasn't backed up to hell like it was Friday. Take 355 to 80, get off at IL 53 (Chicago St), take that for a while and get back on 55 at Coal City Rd. IL 53 doesn't go out of your way and the speed limit is 45 or higher through most of it.

Thanks
