Yes there were many white middle class towns in the ring of inner suburbs such as Elmwood Park, Franklin Park, Schiller Park, Berwyn, etch, scores more. Now many of them, maybe most of them are mixed, partly white but with many Hispanics and others who have recently arrived to this country. This is not only going on in the inner suburbs but other places too such as Du Page County. I see no way to attract many highly educated, so called "professional" people to Carol Stream because there are too many places right near by that are attracted to Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Naperville and the like.

There is nothing really wrong with Carol Stream, its just not a place that attracts people that can afford something better.

Or it attracts buyers who want more house for the money. A lot of the construction in Carol Stream is relatively new for the area and includes amenities like master suites and walk-in closets. These things exist in Wheaton and Glen Ellyn too, but at a large cost premium compared to Carol Stream.

All true, Lookout Kid. A lot of people don't really care about anything else but the bang for the buck. They may or may not care about schools.

Decline? If anything Carol Stream has improved...at least from what it was 20 years ago. Costco is close by, the mall is actually clean and crime free for the most part. Their park district has improved, they also have done some good things with stormwater management. I wouldn't choose to live there, but I did 20 years ago and I can say it's cleaned up to be better than what it was.

I never was a fan of Carol Stream, and that was mainly due to the fact that it didnt have a downtown core, or anything really fun to do (other than Brunswick Zone off of Rt. 64). I also HATED the way the neighborhood streets were laid out. Its almost like they designed them to be as curvy and confusing as possible.
