Hi,

I'm interested in purchasing a house near Oak Park Elementary School, in Aurora. It's closer to the intersection of Front St. and Farnsworth Ave. I went there twice, once to check the house during the day time, and once during the night time to check the area out. "Seems normal" to me. Still, is this a safe neighborhood to live?

Thank you.
Anthony

Do you have kids? I'd be avoiding East Aurora school district (we live in Aurora as well). I never really venture over where you are mentioning, so I don't have any input on that specific location though, sorry.

Nope, East Aurora school district is definitely not good. I guess my point was that if you have school-aged children it doesn't really matter if the neighborhood is OK if the schools aren't unless you were just renting for a couple years while they are preschool age and younger, imo. Obviously bad schools affect resale too even if you don't have kids. I know that many times "bad" schools are subjective to some degree, but with this particular school it isn't the case.

The link below is to Oak Park Elementary's ISAT test results for 2011. Just under half of the students meet or exceed state test standards. The school has a high low-income rate and over half of the population is LEP students (Limited English proficient). The school is on Academic Watch.

IIRC: School

As far as the neighborhood goes, I don't know a whole lot about it other than driving through regularly. It seems okay when I drive through. You could contact the Aurora Police Department and see if they have any crime stats for that area.

It's a heavily hispanic area and I wouldn't say it's really bad or dangerous, but it's no naperville. Also that school is rated quite poorly in test scores.

I have a friend that moved into a very nice town home in that area for a great price, (which may be why you are looking at the area) but their are other facts to consider whether or not it's the right place for you.

It's a predominantly Hispanic (mexican) neighborhood. The East Aurora School District is also about 82% Hispanic. So that summarizes the school, the district, and the neighborhood. the District's % of low income students is about 81% too.
