In the south and west loop you'll be lucky to find a 2 bedroom apartment for $2000.

Lagrange is a nice option. Character and lots of trees, plus good schools.

If you want to stay closer to Chicago, Oak Park or River Forest. There are probably a number of rental homes around the $2000 mark/maybe slightly higher. FYI - there are tons of Loyola docs in Oak Park.

Jackson Language Academy is in the West Loop. It's not selective enrollment, but it's magnet with an attendance based lottery. It's an excellent CPS school. Francis Xavier Warde is a great Catholic school in the West Loop as well.

A lot of people/docs who work at Loyola live in Oak Park. Good schools, it boarders Chicago, and it is very convenient to get downtown from Oak Park (2 subway/elevated train lines green and blue, and Metra train line) and the expressway runs right through Oak Park to get downtown. You will be able to find a house in your price range.

I think the school report cards will list that information separately.

There isn't a large Asian population in Oak Park. It is diverse - both economically and racially, and even politically. But as long as I can remember the Asian population hasn't been large.

It is true that there are more Asian professionals in Oak Brook. That is a little further out from the city. It wouldn't be a terrible commute, but it would have worse traffic during rush hour (but fine outside rush hour). It may be harder to find a house to rent for the prices you want. Oak Brook is a bit more spread out with fewer sidewalks and more exclusive areas.

Oak Park is closer to the city, better public transportation options, more dense (less land/lots with houses), probably a little more nuisance crime, and you may see kids playing outside more often.

A lot of Loyola folks live in Oak Park while they are renting. Convenience, get to know the areas, then decide what you like the most when it is time to buy.

Default Fair assessment, ought to acknowledge difficulty of moving with school age children...

I agree that Oak Park does not have nearly as visible / signficant Asian population as other towns.

I would caution that moving with school age children is far more challenging than w/o.

The fact that kids do better when their is continuity in the education would cause to advise to as much research upfront to find a place where there is a high likelihood of being able to keep your child in the same school regardless of renting or owning. I do not agree that "getting to know the area" needs to happen by having some throw away rental -- do the research online, narrow down choices with one or two weekend visits then rent a place in town when you'll be happy to "settle in" with either a purchase or rental. Much easier and more conducive to children's learning...
