We are currently in the market for a home and are looking in the Fox River Grove, Lake Zurich and Barrington's areas. My husband will be commuting in to River Woods. How bad of a drive would that be from Fox River Grove? I know the schools are all great in these areas; can you give me the down sides to any of these towns?

Thanks

It would more or less be a striaght shot down Half Day Rd/Route 22.

However, it can be a bad commute, because many of the roads in Lake County have not kept up with the population growth there over the last 20-30 years, and many roads are still 2-lane.

I know a portion of 22 has been widened to four, but parts are still 2-lane.

I am not sure where the boundaries are for all the districts from the map, but I know the real estate values reflect the more favored schools... http://www2.census.gov/geo/sd2009_re...C17111_000.pdf

Fox River Grove feeds into three school systems, Cary Grove, Crown-Dundee and Barrington, depending on where in FRG. Many do not perceive these schools as equal. As Chet mentioned, the prices of property varies with school district as do the property taxes.

Most properties in Barrington feed into Barrington schools. Same for most of Lake Zurich.

The commute from this area on your best day is probably 30 minutes. ( Just drove this route the other day and was pleasantly surprised, despite some construction) Worst day, in bad weather, it could exceed an hour. It's not too bad as Chicago commutes go.

Commuting down rte 22 would be a deal breaker for me. About 6 weeks ago it took me 15 minutes during rush hour, just to get from Buffalo Grove Rd to Krueger Rd, a distance of about 2.5 miles. The main delay was where it went from 4 lanes to 2 lanes just west of rte 83. Long Grove NIMBY's keeping it from being 4 laned or lack of funds by Lake Co?
Why not move closer to work? Buffalo Grove, north section of Arlington Heights, nicer sections of Wheeling will provide good schools, libraries, parks and recs and a much better commute. My place in AH to Discover in Riverwoods is about 15-20 minutes.

All the towns you mentioned are beautiful and close to nature. The downside of Fox River Grove is that the town is VERY small and everyone knows everything about everyone else. It can be very frustrating and annoying/
