Hi, I am looking to relocate to Chicago although not sure yet about the city or the suburbs. I am wondering if anyone from NY has relocated to Chicago and can give me some comparisons on the two....the winters, the people, the expenses etc. Thanks so much for your help!!!

While I am from Chicagoland, I have lived in the ( NY) city and 2 different NJ locations. Does this count?

Weather: A tad more extreme than the tri-state area, sans hurricanes and such.

People are people, everywhere you go. Larger and substantial ethnic enclaves are found in the NY area.

Expenses are generally less in the greater Chicagoland area. Housing ( renting or owning) is usually substantially less costly, especially now.

Gas is higher in Chicago.

Commuting is usually easier and less costly than anywhere in the tri-state area.

Chicago is cleaner.

Probably one of the biggest surprises to those on the East Coast is Lake Michigan. Had a NY friend who proclaimed it an oceon, upon seeing it for the first time.

Where on LI are you?

The job comes first. Makes no sense to relo here unless you have a job waiting for you. The location of the job and commuting are factors that likely will influence where you live.

This has been so helpful. I am from East Meadow, Nassau County but currently live in Babylon in Suffolk County. Not that there is much difference these days - the Island is just so crowded everywhere now. How far outside the city are you, if you don't mind me asking? And do you happen to have a view on the job market there? Long Island is terrible right now.
