My name is Barry and my family (kids ages 7, 5, 1) is looking to find the 'right' neighborhood in Northbrook. Is there a particular section of Northbrook that has a larger Jewish population? And that has more young families? And that is in walking proximity to a train? We desire each of these 3 things and any thoughts are appreciated.

St. Stephens Green?
Lee Woods?
Northbrook Estates? Gardens?
Northbrook Knolls? Manor?

Thanks in advance for the discussion,

Barry

I can't remember the name but a friend of a friend lived in an area that was comfortably "Jewish", as she described it. I think maybe Charlemain? I think the street was Bordeux or something similar. I have no idea if this is near the train though.

Is there a realtor who will tell you, "unofficially" of course? It's a hard thing to determine. Another friend was looking for a relatively Jewish area in California and drove around looking for mezzuzahs on the doors. Odd but helpful in her case.

Sorry I don't know any details of the areas you mentioned. Good luck to you and your family.

Sarah -- much appreciated. I definitely like that idea of mezzuzah hunting! For the family thing, we try to sneak a peak in people's yards to see if they have a swing set. We'll look into Bordeaux street.

Thanks!

West Northbrook (between Lake Cook Rd on the north, Technie on the south, Sanders on the west, Phingsten on the East) is VERY Jewish. You can't go wrong with any neighborhoods there.

Not walking to the train though. The train station is Downtown Northbrook and it's not a very Jewish area there.

I looked at Northbrook about ten years ago. I ended up buying in Glenview, which is not overly Jewish, but that was not really a big deal for me. I was looking for something more diverse. The downtown section in Northbrook I liked a lot, but it was not very jewish at all. It is a great area, that eastern section, and the train is right there. However, if I had to pick a dominant religion there, I would say it is mostly Catholic. Northbrook is heavily jewish in the western section and many other areas. I don't know the neighborhoods you mentioned, but Charlemagne and Sunset Fields are pretty jewish, amongst several others. Pretty much most of Nbrk. is Jewish, but not the part near the train. However, you will still find some Jews there.
If you want heavily Jewish, walkable to the train, I would recommend Highland Park, Deerfield, Glencoe. Buffalo Grove is also very Jewish, but I don't know anything about the neighborhoods near the train. I find that most of the other suburbs are more mixed religiously, with maybe the exception of Kenilworth. Jews live pretty much in all of the Northern Suburbs these days.
Happy House hunting!

Walking distance to the train in Northbrook? Double check and make sure freight doesn't use the same line or one nearby. In some places, they do. Makes for very rumbly living if you're within walking distance.
