We just moved here after spending years in Austin, TX where we developed a breakfast taco habit. We can't find any breakfast tacos around the north Evanston area. Does anyone know of any? We would drive. Yes, I know these are easily made at home but we are hoping we can find a hidden gem somewhere like Torchy's or tacodeli!

I haven't heard of breakfast tacos per se. You would likely need to go where there are large concentrations of Hispanics. NW and West burbs. Wheeling, Palatine, and Aurora all have tons of Mexican tacquerias, generally in shopping centers.

There are a few places on Clark in the city within a couple miles of Evanston. I can't really say how good they are though.

Unfortunately I have found that finding a breakfeast burrito or taco in chicago land is like trying to find a good hotdog or italian beef in a border state. The reality of the situation is you are going to be hardpressed to find this and the results of what you find may or may not be what you are looking for.

Illinois is just not a border state and really did not have a large mexican population prior to the 1990's.
So there really was not a wide array of mexican eats until recently, and local tastes developed accordingly.

A thing to remember is that taqeria's clientel often do not include people from mexico and are largely geared towards american born consumers and varying menu's and prices tend to reflect that. A burrito as we know it is not a burrito in Mexico and most Mexican folks are not going to pay 10 bucks for a few tacos and a coke, they will just buy the coke and cook tacos themselves.

Which is probably what you should do if you if never find them breakfast tacos.

Go to Wheeling, Palatine, or Aurora. The food is completely authentic Mexican at a lot of the smaller restaurants in the shopping centers.

Want an invite when I make my "un-authentic" breakfast burritos?

Chicago Heights has some delicious Mexican food joints and a couple Mexican corner stores too.

No, thanks. I'd rather not drive all the way to freakin' Arlington Heights to meet up with someone who mocks the idea that a non-white person could actually have something better to contribute than a white person.

The Whole Foods in Northbrook has breakfast burritos on the hot food bar on weekend mornings. They're ok. Not classic Tex-Mex though.
