Why did GM make a deal with failed Nikola ?

GM has made a deal with Nikola, whose founder has been kicked out for falsifying product development details to boost stock price. Why the heck did GM partner with them !! What do they gain ?

GM sees the potential (much like early Tesla investors pre actual vehicles) of the commercial market based on Nikola's engineering. The thinking is Nikola's problems were less about the actual engineering and product but more about inexperience management, finances and product development.

Nikola may very well turn out to be a good investment for GM. I'm not touching that company (stock) with a ten foot pole.
