They are pretty solid workhorses I mean the 4.3L vortec V6 will last a long time but then again avoid the mid 80's early 90's 2.8L V6 as it is underpowered
I did a lot of research on these a while back because they are the only decent sized van that came with AWD. Mostly, they are tanks. Except for little things (plastic stuff that typically breaks, sun visors, things like that).
Some years had a problem with the way the crumpled in a crash (crushed the driver). They fixed that eventually. there was also a period of two or so years that had some major failure issue that i do not remember (seems like it was transmission).
Most of the ones we found were super high miles. People did not tend to sell them until thy were thoroughly thrashed. I took it as a good sign that people who had them tended to keep them.
We never did find a newer/low miles awd one, so we never bought one.
My left foot was awkwardly bent around the wheelwell. The brake pedal was so tiny I was afraid I would miss it and crash. The lack of legroom and tiny pedals could be serious problems with big winter boots. The other thing I didn't like was the three-piece tailgate. That is extra moving parts it doesn't need.
I’ve had my Astro for 6 years. I bought it with 184000 on it for only$2000. It now has 321000 on it and I drive it every day loaded with tools and materials. The only things I’ve had to do to it is replace intake gaskets at 230000 miles, brakes a couple times, plugs wires cap and rotor. Other than that just keep the oil changed and routine maintenance. Best work van ever! It takes a beating and keeps rolling. 2001 Astro van
The 94 to 97 aerostars are much better if you can find one. The 3.0 engine is one of the best Ford has ever made.
