You sure it's a head gasket. It's more apt to be the intake manifold gasket. Even so, the fix is probably going to be cost prohibitive. Plus, that era of Century had a lot of other issues.
I'd say it's probably a $1,000 car on Craigslist if you decide to go that direction.
That's what I was thinking. Those 3.1/3.4 GM engines are notorious for intake manifold gasket failures. I sold my Chevy Venture before mine had a chance to go bad.
Thank you all for all the good advice. I put it on CL for 2000.000...I know what you're thinking Please just wish me luck. I put ASKING 2000.00..... I can always lower if I don't get any bites...

A few years back the intake manifold gasket went on our '99 Chevy and cost just shy of $800 to fix. Its been running fine ever since although it needed brake work last inspection a year ago.
It was a lot to spend ( on a cheap gasket GM could easily have replaced with a better one when it was built) but the cars been reliable and still looks decent and has everything original still working. Its still just under 100K and while it may not be worth a lot of money, its still cheaper than buying and paying off a new or newer used car.
If the car is still running well otherwise, I'd pay to have it fixed. If it has other issues, then I probably wouldn't.
Mistake, OP, fix it. Esp. since you're on a fixed income, you know the history of the car, and you will not get as much of a car for what you will get paid for. JMHO
Friend the problem is knowing just how much it will really take to fix the car . Four to five hundred "to get it back on the road " is rather cheap. A car that is roadworthy as is is always worth much more than one that you can not drive RIGHT NOW...See what cars of that model which are running are being sold for and then do the math. It can be tricky .You will not get 2000 as is. You can bank on that
