We are currently planning a relocation to east TN and my job has offered us a choice of either Knoxville area or Chattanooga area. I know the Knoxville area fairly well as both my parents were born and raised there and I still have family there. My concern is where we live in NC, Salisbury (between Charlotte and Greensboro), is getting away from being the once family oriented town it was say 15 years ago. I want to find a place where I am excited about my sons future there rather than worried to death about it. I've lived in Charlotte and have no desire to live inside Chattanooga or Knoxville but we are looking for somewhere nearby where the commute to work would not be devastating but live somewhere more slow paced and family oriented. Obviously from what I've said FAMILY, FAMILY, FAMILY!!! Any thoughts???

We moved from Windstone in Ringgold,GA (job). It was a beautiful executive neighborhood. The community is on a golf course and it is gated. They have planned activities for kids, pool and tennis. It was the best place that we found close to I75, downtwn Chattanooga (20min) and near Hamilton Place Mall with shopping, food and easy access to the airport. The schools were good (Ringgold HS, Graysville elementary) but there are also numerous private schools in the area. We loved dwntwn Chattanooga with the aquarium and all the nice family oriented dining plus shops.

If your goal is FAMILY, FAMILY, FAMILY I think you should stick with the Knoxville area as you have plenty of family there. Chatt is beautiful and I hope and pray my house sells so I can move there, but Knox is great too. Tons of family stuff to do in Chatt as well, but Knox is close to all the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg stuff.

Sounds like you want to be in a small town - small enough so that your family is the main attraction? You may want to check out Soddy-Daisy which is outside Chattanooga. Not sure if it's small enough for you, but its a good wholesome place overall.

I would definitely take Chattanooga over Knoxville. Knoxville has worse air quality than Los Angeles.
Chattanooga is actually closer to Nashville and Atlanta also. I dont know that Chatt is too Family oriented, but you said you want to live outside and commute in. How about somewhere between Cleveland and Chatt.
