I'm looking for suggestions on areas outside Charlottesville to live. Spouse will be working about 10 miles east of Charlottesville. Willing to commute up to 1 hour, prefer to keep commute around half hour. Most important is good schools. Have a 9yo, 4yo and 1 yo. Looking to buy a house with some land around 1/2 acre or so.

Depends on price range.....and be in a great school district....they are all good elem. schools, south of town not as good...but west, north and east are good...

We live in Fluvanna county at Lake Monticello....lake golf, lots of retirees, out in the country and 25 minutes to town (its SE of Cville) Schools are OK and improving (new HS being built)

Default Update on Fluvanna schools

Lake Monticello is definitely more than just retirees. There are many families and a growing group of young professionals. The schools are rated highest in the Charlottesville area for SAT schools, on time graduation etc in the state and Yes it's better than Albemarle. :-) The new high school is supposed to be one of the most high tech high schools in the country. ALSO Cunningham and Columbia elementary have IB programs, only 5 other elementary schools in the entire state have this program. It's definitely something to boast about. If you know anything about IB you know it's one of the best educational programs in the WORLD! Central is very large but apparently that problem should be fixed by 2012. Good luck to you.

Louisa County is another possibility. The real estate prices and taxes are more reasonable than Albemarle County.

My daughter attended Trevilians Elementary School and is now in the Middle School. We are very pleased with the middle school. Her time at Trevilians was mainly affected by which teacher she had. A really good teacher meant a really good year. Louisa has a new elementary school on Rt. 208 -- Moss Nuckols.
